The Story Behind Locker 2 Leader
I played sports ever since I could walk, literally. My weeks were consumed with my dad driving me from one practice or tournament to another. I learned from a very young age the importance of managing your time and working for success.
I’m as stubborn as I am resilient and in 8th grade my soccer and basketball teams asked me to commit fully to one sport – the answer – no. The result – moving from the elite team to the A team. The other result? A huge chip on my shoulder.
If there is one thing you can’t tell me it’s “you’re not good enough” because I will always work to prove you wrong. Freshman year of High School I was one of only two Freshman to make Varsity Soccer and Basketball.
Senior year I tore my ACL and had my world rocked – I didn’t know who I was anymore. I worked harder than ever to be back in 6 months and walked on to the Stonehill Women’s Basketball team. My coach pulled me into her office on day one of school and said “you’ll be a practice player and never see the court.”
Sophomore year I started on an Elite Eight team with 4 seniors in the lineup, Junior year I had a full scholarship and Senior Year I was a Captain.
Senior year also happened to be Covid where we were at the NCAA tournament and got sent home. I was angry and felt like high school all over again where I didn’t get to finish out on my terms. What’s that you hear, another chip on my shoulder?
I worked full time in sales, while doing 75 hard and getting my Master’s in Sports Administration. I wrote my thesis on the gap student-athletes face in holistic development and crushed my quota at the same time. I never fully understood at that time why I was so much more organized and effective than my colleagues.
I was promoted to Account Executive within a year and a year later I was at a startup as the Director of Global Business Development – hiring a team of over 20. This is where I truly understood where the value an athlete brings.
Now, I’m lucky to be at my dream job – holistically developing student-athletes in a way that I never got.
You see the thing is though, I’m not unique. This is the story of an athlete, people who don’t take no for an answer and will always compete to be better.
